Music is at the heart of every primary school and Midsomer Norton Primary is no exception.
From the moment children enter our school in Nursery, they have the opportunity to sing and make music as part of the school day. Music is taught in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 as part of the National Curriculum where they learn to compose and perform, in a variety of contexts, and to listen to a wide range of different types of music which they are able to discuss and analyse.
Singing takes place often on a daily basis, but also weekly in whole Key Stage assemblies. Children also have the opportunity to learn an instrument through our involvement with Music For Schools and our association with Somervale. We currently offer lessons in flute, clarinet, trumpet, cornet and saxophone and hope to reintroduce lessons for piano and guitar in the near future. Children also have the opportunity to take part in music-based clubs, which differ from term to term. These have included choir, djembe drumming, guitar, ocarina, recorders and glee club.
Music plays a key role in major school events such as our annual Christmas production, Harvest Celebration and Leavers' Assembly, but throughout the year our pupils experience many other musical events. This academic year a group of children will be joining Somervale and St John’s Primary to see Mary Poppins at The Bristol Hippodrome. We are also hosting a combined schools carol service, to take place at a local secondary school. In January the choir will be part of a 6,000 strong choir, performing at the Genting Arena in Birmingham and will be involved in various sponsored carol singing events to raise money for this.
Midsomer Norton Primary School has been recognised by the Bath and North East Somerset Music Hub as a beacon singing school and music was noted to be ‘a particular strength’ in our most recent OFSTED report.
History is taught as a discrete subject with links made to other subjects where appropriate.
Our overview for Music ensures that musical knowledge and skills are built upon progressively as children move through the school.
